Roland's Tenth Traditional

Mt. Kaukau New Year Run

1 January 2004

Anniversary Event

Since 1995 I have been offering friends to come with me for the first run of the new year at 8 o'clock in the morning on New Year´s Day!

The course leads from my home to the top of Mt. Kaukau in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah and back. It is not an easy run, but considering what everybody has been through the night before, we take in VERY easy. From the start at an elevation of 190 metres above sea-level the run goes down to approximately 120 metres, only to climb up to 445 metres mainly between kilometers 4 and 5.

To mark this tenth anniversary event, this time the way back lead us once more over the ridge to the top of the Crow´s Nest (approx. 285 m) on a track known as the Skyline Track. From the Crow´s Nest we then descended through gorse country back to my home. The total distance this year was around 9.5 km.

This time 15 runners/walkers set out to conquer Mount Kaukau. We organised ourselves in three groups (fast runners, not quite so fit runners and walkers), in order to arrive at the summit roughly around the same time.

The conditions were perfect, as usual! The temperature was very pleasant and would peak at 25 degrees Celsius later that day. On the summit and later on the ridge we were exposed to a Northerly wind, which cooled us down considerably. The views of Wellington City and its harbour, Port Nicholson, were stunning once again.

We´re on our way ...

A bit of fun on the way ... and some posing.

What a great place to be!

What took you guys so long?

Sprint for the summit.

Naturally with a view.

Well, just another fence.

Up and down on the ridge.

Last climb up to the Crow´s Nest.

Waiting for the slow guy (me!) before the final descent.

Let´s get down that hill and have some breakfast! ... The last hurdle - we´re home.

Again we had an opportunity to celebrate
a group of fifth-time participants,
Mark Growcott, Brian Read and Jas Dullabh,
who were presented with Certificates of Merit.
