Roland's Ninth Traditional

Mt. Kaukau New Year Run

1 January 2003

Since 1995 I have been offering friends to come with me for the first run of the new year at 8 o'clock in the morning on New Year's Day!

The course leads from my home to the top of Mt. Kaukau in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah and back. It is not an easy run, but considering what everybody has been through the night before, we take in VERY easy. From the start at an elevation of 190 metres above sea-level the run goes down to approximately 120 metres, only to climb up to 445 metres mainly between kilometers 4 and 5.

This time 12 runners/walkers set out to conquer Mount Kaukau. And the conditions were perfect. The temperature was very pleasant and would peak at 23 degrees Celsius later that day. On the summit there was a reasonable amount of wind, which made us not hang out up there for too long. The views of Wellington Harbour and the South Island were spectecular once again.

Pictorial record

The loneliness of the Mount Kaukau runner ...

But we were not alone.

In fact, as it turned out,
we weren't even the first.

The traditional summit group shot.
Again with a view.

On the return trip, an opportunity for some zoological studies.

Everybody is in a good mood:
Looking forward to the breakfast and
a happy new running year.
