Roland's Eighth Traditional

Mt. Kaukau New Year Run

1 January 2002

Since 1995 I have been offering friends to come with me for the first run of the new year at 8 o'clock in the morning on New Year's Day!

The course leads from my home to the top of Mt. Kaukau in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah and back. It is not an easy run, but considering what everybody has been through the night before, we take in VERY easy. From the start at an elevation of 190 metres above sea-level the run goes down to approximately 120 metres, only to climb up to 445 metres mainly between kilometers 4 and 5.

With participation back up to the event average of 15 runners/walkers we faced new challenges in 2002. It was cloudy as never before in the 8 years of the history of this popular event. And for the first time we reached the summit of Mt. Kaukau only to find ourselves covered in a cloud. We were not even able to see the transmitter mast, which is only about 100 metres away from the summit.

Look for yourselves ...

Finally a view over Wellington ... half way down..

After breakfast we had the usual celebration of third-time participants of the event. This year we honoured Brian Read, Mark Growcott, Gabby O'Rourke and Norm Wilcox, who received Certificates of Achievement.
