Orlando´s Running in New Zealand |

Since 1995 I have been offering friends to come with me for the first run
of the new year at 8 o'clock in the morning on New Year's Day! The course leads from my home to the top of Mt. Kaukau in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah and back. It is not an easy run, but considering what everybody has been through the night before, we take in VERY easy. From the start at an elevation of 190 metres above sea-level the run goes down to approximately 120 metres, only to climb up to 445 metres mainly between kilometers 4 and 5. This year's variation of the way back took us up yet another steep climb up Amapur Drive in Khandallah and down Fox Street into Ngaio, before climbing up that last section half-way up the Crow's Nest. This year we had a reduced participation with 9 runners. Many people had apparently realised that this was the real beginning of the new Millennium and therefore engaged themselves in some more serious level of celebration than the previous year. Well, fair enough! Everybody has their own priorities. Enough talked, let's see the pictures ... |

This time we had the best distance viewing conditions ever.
The South Island of New Zealand is clearly visible over the Cook Straight.

For the very first time we also celebrated our first fifth-time participants, Maryanne and John Palmer, who were presented with Certificates of Merit. Visit the Mount Kaukau Hall of Fame. |
