Roland's Sixth Traditional

Mt. Kaukau New Year Run

1 January 2000

Since 1995 I have been offering friends to come with me for the first run of the new year at 8 o'clock in the morning on New Year's Day!

The course leads from my home to the top of Mt. Kaukau in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah and back. It is not an easy run, but considering what everybody has been through the night before, we take in VERY easy. From the start at an elevation of 190 metres above sea-level the run goes down to approximately 120 metres, only to climb up to 445 metres mainly between kilometers 4 and 5.

To do something special as a welcome to the year 2000, this time the way back lead us over the ridge to the top of the Crow's Nest (approx. 285 m) on a track known as the Skyline Track. From the Crow's Nest we then descended through gorse country and bush back to my home. The total distance this year was around 10 km.

This year we had a record participation with 25 runners, among them one from as far away as Kansas. In addition we had one visitor from the Netherlands, who walked a slightly different way to meet us at the top of Mt.Kaukau.
