Roland's Fourth Traditional

Mt. Kaukau New Year Run

Thursday, 1 January 1998

The man responsible for the madness!
Since 1995 I have been offering friends from the Wellington Marathon Clinic to come with me for the first run of the new year at 8 o'clock in the morning on New Year's Day!

The course leads from my home to the top of Mt. Kaukau in the Wellington suburb of Khandallah and back. It is not an easy run, but considering what everybody has been through the night before, we take in VERY easy. From the start at an elevation of 190 metres above sea-level the run goes down to approximately 120 metres, only to climb up to 445 metres mainly between kilometers 4 and 5. The way back is slightly longer. The total distance is around 11 km.
On the slopes of Mt. Kaukau the run follows partly the course that was proposed for the 1998 World Mountain Running Championships. Unfortunately the champs were given to another country. But we surely try to get them here one day ...

This year 14 friends joined me (although declared mad by all those who decided not to come!).

All 15 runners made it to the top of Mt. Kaukau.
Not bad considering date and time!

Enjoying the view over Wellington ...

On the way back down. Part of the TV transmitter on the summit can be seen in the background.

During the after-run morning tea Len and Margaret Weldon were honoured as the first third-time participants of the event (both ran in 1995, 1997 and 1998) and received Certificates of Achievement.
Visit the Mount Kaukau Hall of Fame.
