Pencarrow Lighthouse Fun Run

Sunday, 20 February 1994

This is a unique and picturesque 15.5 km course from Eastbourne (Burdan's Gate) following the coast line along the entrance to Wellington Harbour and past the historic Pencarrow Lighthouse into Fitzroy Bay towards Baring Head. From here the course turns inland, where it traverses uphill over private farmland before descending to join the Wainuiomata Coast Road. The finish is near to the mouth of the Wainuiomata River.

The two years I have done this run (1994 and 1995), friends from the Wellington Marathon Clinic and I ran it as our "regular" long Sunday training run, i.e. at our usual training pace of 5 minutes per km. To make it a bit more exciting we used to run it both ways with a little extra bit at the end totalling approximately 34 km.
