CHRISTCHURCH CITY MARATHON

Annually in June

Queen's Birthday Weekend

Images of 6 June 1999

This run was my Marathon-comeback after more than four years. A good choice! The course is absolutely flat and sometime in the 1970s on a variation of this course the second fastest Marathon at the time was run. That was a 2:09 finish.

Since my preparation had been anything but optimal, I was prepared to run my slowest race ever. And so I did, but only by 6:14 minutes and only 20 minutes slower than my personal best of 3:09:23 (Auckland, October 1994). This is quite an achievement especially because it was based on an average of 3 training runs per week, which would have totalled to no more than 50 to 70 km per week. This compares to 6 run (90 - 100 km) five years ago. Obviously I'm happy with the result of 3:29:32 hours and I'm considering to revisit my old goal of targeting these 3 hours!

Majority of WMC Runners at the Finish

The runners in the above group photo are all members of the Wellington Marathon Clinic, but some belong to other clubs as well, e.g. Scottish Harriers or Wellington Harriers.

It deserves mention that five or six of us ran personal best times in this event, which was started at 8.30 in the morning at a temperature of -1°C (30°F). Suzette (257) ran her very first Marathon.
